British Museum

It has taken me a while to get round to this post however its finally here! A few weeks ago I went on a trip to London and whilst I was there I took a trip to the British Museum, it was really helpful and VERY interesting. The vast amount of rooms and treasures inspired me to get drawing. Everywhere I looked there were small ornaments and artifacts that I could draw patterns and colours from, not always in keeping with my theme but full of inspiration under the tribal umbrella. I'm not very good at drawing so a lot of the images you see are close up focusing on pattern as this is how I like to pull my inspiration. I also took some face charts with me and on a few occasions I drew patterns directly onto these, this is a very simple idea but if you can imagine this transferred on to the skin it would look amazing.

Experimenting with Structured hair

After looking at images in fashion magazines of structured hair I was pleased to learn that we would be taught this in our next technical lesson. Using a dolls head I experimented by using objects in the hair to create shapes that could not be achieved with the hair alone. These objects included polystyrene balls and sponge that could be cut into any shape you wanted. I also used crepe hair to give the illusion of more hair where the wasn't enough real hair to use. Crepe hair is great to use because it comes in a range of colours. The results of this were basic however really helped me to understand how you could build on this to create amazing hair designs that would lend themselves to most themes. To be in keeping with my own theme of the Surma and Mursi tribes I would think about incorporating flowers, leaves and twigs within the hair designs. 

Hair designs- highlights magazines

Looking through issue 32 of Highlights magazine I came across loads of shoots that displayed structured hair. I need to think carefully about hair in my final looks and not just the make up. Decorative and big hair is something that I feel would lend itself most to my theme as the images below of the tribes display really interesting and colourful flowers and other natural products adorning the head and framing the face. The magazine images below include work from hair and make up artist Tonomi Hiramoto as well as hair designers Felix Fischer and Lacy Redway. My favourite images are the untamed, back combed looks designed by Felix Fischer because it lends itself well to my chosen theme and I can imagine how amazing the images would look if there were flowers or twigs entwined within the hair. This is something I may experiment with later on.
